Intaglio prints are produced when the printmaker uses a process by which lines and/or textures are inscribed onto a metal plate, for example, by scratching directly onto the metal with a sharp pointed instrument or allowing acid to eat into the plate. When the plate is completed, it is inked and then wiped to allow the ink to remain in the recessed areas where it will be transferred onto the paper by the pressure of the press. Included in the 30 prints comprising the exhibition are examples of etching, drypoint, aquatint and engraving as well as prints which utilize more than one process.
