In relief prints, such as woodcuts, linocuts and wood engravings, the printmaker carefully removes all portions of the printing matrix which are not to print. When th matrix is inked, the ink remains on the raised surfaces where it is picked up and transferred to the paper. While many contemporary printmakers have abandoned the relief process in favor of processes which are conducive to larger formats and more technically involved, there are still artists who prefer the directness of the relief process. 25 prints are included in the exhibition.
